A Powerful Occasion when Liam Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"Rosenior represents an excellent manager that understands the game back to front, and that's the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's first black footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, as their new manager following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including individuals in interim positions – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he grew up and played locally, he understands this community," added Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe someone like Liam managing their club, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a household that champions equality… it is profound and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, this represents a huge step for Chelsea, for London, for all young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Numbers Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's first black head coach.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other current Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across the English game corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

As per a BFP 2023 report, 43% of Premier League footballers are from black heritage.

Yet, analysis from Kick It Out found only 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, according to figures from eleven clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of ability present within black and underrepresented communities... they want the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth permanent British managers currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which trails the continent's other major divisions in terms of national managers.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure all young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It is truly motivating to young English academy coaches to witness an individual land that job with his background and we hope he does really well."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford back in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He started penning a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: that vast lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "passionate", noting that he could relate to the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him with a move from France to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach make a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President while he was in office, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering black boss with Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
