Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
