Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
